AutoSave — Overview

Never lose Inventor work to a crash again.

What it does

Inventor AutoSave is an add-in that automatically saves your Autodesk Inventor documents in the background after a set time period, so you never lose progress to an unexpected crash or a forgotten save. It addresses the fact that Inventor does not natively support automatic saving. AutoSave only saves a document when changes have actually been made, keeping the Inventor process clean and efficient, and is enabled by default.

Key features

  • Automatically saves documents in the background at a set time interval
  • Supports all document types: parts, assemblies, drawings, and presentations
  • Only saves a document when changes have actually been made
  • Adjustable save interval via the AutoSave settings (default is 30 minutes)
  • Toolbar icon shows status at a glance: blue = enabled, red = disabled
  • Click the AutoSave button to enable or disable it; enabled by default
  • Handles file migration via the Inventor Save dialog, letting you save or cancel

Changing the save interval

  1. In Inventor, open any document — the AutoSave buttons sit on the BM tab in the AutoSave panel (available in the Part, Assembly, Drawing and Presentation environments).
  2. Click Settings to open the Auto-Save Settings dialog.
  3. Set Auto-Save after … Minutes (default: 30) and, if needed, choose which Documents to save (default: Only Active Document).
  4. Click Save.

An interval of at least 15 minutes is recommended for good data protection. The AutoSave button next to Settings toggles automatic saving on or off (blue = on, red = off).

Compatibility: Autodesk Inventor 2020–2027.
